Where Did Cain Get His Wife
The question I am asked
the most is, “Where did Cain get his wife?”. Most people who don’t believe the
Bible seem to think this question stumps believers. This is not a trick question
and we have very good answers from the Bible. The Bible says: “Then Cain went
out from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of
Eden. And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch... “ We are told
where Cain went “Nod” and that he knew his wife. This expression “knew his wife”
refers to the sexual union of man and woman and the resulting conception of Enoch.
Who was she? She must have been his sister or if she were a generation later,
than a first cousin. The Bible tells us that Adam; “After he begot Seth, the days
of Adam were eight hundred years; and he had sons and daughters. So all the days
that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died.” After Adam had
Seth he had another 800 years to have many children. Notice in the “begats” that
follow this one it often says; ” and he had sons and daughters”. The fact communicated
here is that there were whole lot of children born in each generation. Remember
God have commanded Adam to be fruitful and fill the Earth. A third fact that tells
us she was sister or cousin is that all humans come from the first pair Adam and
Eve. Again the Bible tells us; “And Adam called his wife's name Eve, because she
was the mother of all living.” So then all people come from Adam and Eve. But,
you ask, how could they marry a close relative ? The prohibition against marrying
close relations comes at the time of the Law given to Moses because of the danger
of accumulated genetic errors and the loss of genetic richness in the early generations.
Abraham married his half sister Sarah. They probably looked quite similar since
he was able to pass her off as his sister.
